thursday thoughts on saturday >>> no one is a good person

No one is a good person. Including you. That’s a fact.

Has anyone ever asked you if you’re a good person? Well, if you’re unsure of how to answer that question, just read these few verses in Psalms.

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good. The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one. (Psalms 14:1-3)

Powerful, right? These are true words and I believe them with my whole heart. God does not lie, nor does God try to say things to make people feel better about themselves. As much as these words may sting, I’m still going to address the issue. You (including me and everyone else on this earth) are not a good person. We are all corrupt and driven by our own worldly desires.

These verses clearly say that no one is good. None of us are good, therefore we do not do good things. But don’t lose hope. If you are a born-again Christian, meaning you have submitted your life to Jesus and are living a life pleasing to Him, you will see good things pouring out of your life. That’s evidence that the Holy Spirit is living inside of you. All those “good works” that Paul talks about in his epistles, is not of your own doing. It’s God working in and through your life. That’s why we’re supposed to give God the glory for everything we do.

On another note, we are saved by faith and not by works. So many people in different religions think that God is pleased by our good works, so they go around doing lots of good things for others. But in actuality, that’s not how it works. We are saved by our faith, and by having faith, God is pleased.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

…knowing that man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. (Galatians 2:16)

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. (James 2:24)

There ya go. Plain and simple in God’s written Word. Yes, good works are involved in our faith, but we are not saved by good works alone. Faith comes first, in fact it is necessary for salvation. You can’t believe without faith. Just like you can’t believe in Jesus Christ without faith (confidence in something without needing proof).

So now do you believe you are a good person? Sometimes, I still think I am. But verses like these convict me. It further reminds me that I am not good AT ALL. Not one bit. Whatever good you see coming from me, is not actually coming from me. Whoah, I tricked you! 😉

Anything good coming out of my life is from my Father in Heaven. All the praise and glory goes to Him! He is the source of my goodness.
