“Salvation is free, but discipleship will cost you your life.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer
I am currently reading The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Michael Van Dyke, which goes through this man’s life as a follower of Jesus during World War II in Nazi Germany. I can’t imagine the warfare Bonhoeffer must have gone through. His constant dedication to God and the study of His Word, is really amazing. God gives us free salvation. He paid the price on the cross, so we don’t have to. However, the cost to follow Him can be dangerous. Jesus said Himself in John 16:33, ““These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” As Christians, we WILL go through persecution, hard times, and faith testers. The cost of discipleship is great. Being a follower of Jesus, our life is on the line. Whether you’re in China, the Middle East, or the U.S, Christians are not very popular. You will be persecuted, whether it’s verbally or physically. But, here’s the great news….Jesus has already won! So, persevere, trust in the Lord, glorify Him, and your reward will be wonderful. The reward is eternity in Heaven with Jesus.
